PORTLAND, Ore. (KTVZ) — – The U.S. Small Business Administration‘s 2022 Small Business of the Year is Brightways Counseling Group of Bend, founded by husband-and-wife team Kevin and Angie Shaw.
Founded in 2017, counselors at Brightways Counseling Group provide comprehensive care for people with a variety of mental health issues in central Oregon. What started with one clinic and eight staff has expanded to four sites in Bend, Madras, Redmond and Woodburn, Oregon, with 65 staff who, in 2021, helped 2,634 patients become the best version of themselves- same.
The SBA Small Business Person of the Year Award – as part of National Small Business Week May 2-5, 2022 – recognizes small business owners who demonstrate perseverance and a proven track record as an established business with at least three years in business. Winners must also show growth in net worth and business expansion, increased jobs and sales, product or service innovation, response to adversity, and contributions to projects community-oriented.
Winners from each of the nation’s 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands will be officially recognized on May 5 at the National Small Business Week (NSBW) Virtual Summit Awards Ceremony as part of the NSBW Free Virtual Summit, an action-packed 4-day event honoring small businesses across the country, educational sessions, online business resources and exciting guest speakers.
National Small Business Week 2022 celebrates the resilience and tenacity of American entrepreneurs who are doing their part to fuel our nation’s historic economic comeback. During National Small Business Week, SBA hits the road for a nationwide bus tour. SBA Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman will visit nine cities across the country and, together with local SBA offices, join local elected officials in celebrating the 32.5 million American small businesses that have played a vital role in our country’s historically strong economic comeback .

With ever-increasing demand for consulting services throughout Oregon, Brightways needed a strong presence where it could be most responsive to the needs of its community, necessitating the expansion of its physical locations. It took both expertise and capital to make it a reality.
With the help of SBA Financing Programsthe company was able to access the capital needed to purchase and redevelop two of its sites where it was able to effectively reach rural and underserved communities.
