A local advice center has a brand new location and a new look a few blocks from its former place of business. Perception Counseling Services’ new location is located at 2825 Seventh St. in downtown Tuscaloosa.
Their new location is larger and offers even more services for the Tuscaloosa community and beyond.
Perception counseling services can help clients with depression, anxiety, domestic violence, substance abuse, PTSD, and trauma, among other mental health issues, and they specialize in mental health training for educators and community leaders in addition to working with adolescents in need.
“It will be very beneficial,” said Perception owner Jennifer Vanhorn. “As we all know, the crime rate in Tuscaloosa has increased over the years, and we want to bring teens affected by these events here for help.”
Perception Counseling also hosts seminars and conferences that hopefully will give these groups resources to better help identify people with mental illnesses.
“Since the onset of COVID-19, teachers have been designated to provide emotional support to students,” Vanhorn said. “They are already overwhelmed with this responsibility, so now it’s about trying to educate them on how to get help.
